This strange, 1985 experiment by Ridley Scott (Blade Runner) starred the up-and-coming Tom Cruise in a fairy-tale world of dwarfs and unicorns and demons. After the horn of a unicorn is broken, darkness and winter descend upon the world. Cruise's character, helped along by a magic sprite played by David Bennent (The Tin Drum), descends into hell to save paradise. This movie is almost a classic case of art direction gone amok. The somewhat amorphous Cruise doesn't lend much dramatic focus or artistic definition, but the drama between Tim Curry's satanic majesty and Mia Sara's character, who becomes a sort of princess of the netherworld, is pretty captivating. A mixed experience all around that makes one wish it had been more successful. --Tom Keogh

1 2010-01-24 Not the version you are expecting. I was sadly disappointed to find out that the only version included in this DVD is the Director's Cut. There is no option to even try to watch the theatrical release. The problem here is that the theatrical release that we have all come to know and love was very different from the original cut from Ridley Scott. For example, the theatrical release had a score created by Tangerine Dream which I thought was perfect. Also, there are many instances where the dialog is different in such a way that it changes the whole feel and flow of the film. The director's cut uses the score by Jerry Goldsmith, but apparently Goldsmith and Ridley Scott had some sort of falling out and Goldsmith's music was never used. Some might say the Goldsmith's score is better, but I disagree. I cannot stand the Director's Cut and nowhere does this product inform you that this unusual version is all you will get. The back of the DVD case does mention that it "includes" the Director's Cut, but I didn't know when I bought the thing that its not talking about bonus features, but rather what you are limited to.
3 2010-01-18 Paint-by-numbers fantasy genre entry The Bottom Line:

Tim Curry (and his incredible makeup/costume artists) makes for a pretty good antagonist but Tom Cruise is a blank as the lead and the whole story feels like someone took the odds and ends from better stories and mashed them together to make a film the world didn't need; the film has acquired a cult around it, no doubt helped by the fact that it was directed by Ridley Scott, but Legend really isn't worth your time.

5 2009-12-29 Love this movie!! I remember watching this movie when I was little. Even years later it is still awesome. I love the unicorns and faries and how the movie is not quite scary, but also a love story! Its funny to look back at Tom Cruise in his younger years! My 9 year old son enjoyed watching it as well.
1 2009-12-25 Utterly disappointing I bought "Legend" based on the raving comments it received here on Amazon. What a big mistake!

OK I hadn't seen it when I was a kid so I don't have any emotional connections with the movie, but what is there to like? A completely pointless story about good and evil (where the good guys are ignorant and evil guys are downright stupid) with horible songs (why, oh God, why are there songs?) and terrible acting (script is a nightmare, too). There is no grandeur you would expect in a fantasy movie. SFX are good for its time (yet I have seen a unicorn horn flopping on the poor horse's head) but can not make up for all the other shortcomings. When compared to such legends as The Dark Crystal or Labyrinth (even the Neverending Story is far better and it is really a kid's movie) from the same time which excel in several areas; this movie looks even worse.

I have this set so I own both the director's cut and the American version. I watched the director's cut but I am not going to waste 2 more hours of my life to watch the other version. Nothing can change the truth: This movie sucks.

Yes, I know thousands will find this comment "not helpful" but anyone who hasn't watched this movie should be duly warned. Please first rent it and if you really like it (can't imagine why, but) then buy it.
5 2009-12-24 Great but Caveat Emptor The movie is great, and all the other reviews will expound on it. Let me just warn you though, this movie had about 9 different versions made and released, and not all are still available. In general, the US version is an affirming love story with some very obviously traditional values, etc. The European version is more of an ambiguos, life-is-more-gray-than-black-and-white, kind of movie (I actually prefer it more, makes it more interesting). But even within those there's the theatrical versus home versus director cuts... which are all different.

Now, you may not think it makes a difference, but subtle changes and the inlcusion/exclusion of one or two scenes can change this entire story ALOT.

Ironically, I've purchased this movie like 8 different times (from different sources) and gotten 5 different versions, but there's a scene that I saw on a tv airing of it 10 years ago, that isn't on ANY of the copies I have (I have it on tape just to prove I'm not losing my mind).

Anyways, point is, it's a great movie no matter what version you get, but if you're looking for a particular copy, be careful what you buy.
