Conan the Barbarian, the movie that turned Arnold Schwarzenegger into a global superstar, is a prime example of a match made in heaven. It's the movie that macho maverick writer-director John Milius was born to make, and Arnold was genetically engineered for his role as the muscle-bound, angst-ridden hero created in Robert E. Howard's pulp novels. Oliver Stone contributed to Milius's screenplay, and the production design by comic artist Ron Cobb represents a perfect cinematic realization of Howard's fantasy world. To avenge the murder of his parents, Conan tracks down the evil Thulsa Doom (James Earl Jones) with the help of Queen Valeria (played by buff B-movie vixen Sandahl Bergman) and Subotai the Mongol (Gerry Lopez). Aptly described by critic Roger Ebert as "the perfect fantasy for the alienated pre-adolescent," this blockbuster is just as enjoyable for adults who haven't lost their youthful imagination. --Jeff Shannon

3 2010-07-23 Don't tamper with a classic This new version is wonderful to look at, and the bonus features are excellent. Sandahl Bergman still smoking hot. SUBOTAI!

But the ending is different from the original version. Recall (in the original release) the final scenes where Conan dispatches Thulsa Doom and sets fire to the temple at the mountain of power. The long static shot of Conan in closeup before he takes up the flaming urn and hurls it high on the temple steps. I got to that point in the new 'collector's edition' and, SPOILER ALERT the addition of one extra character completely changed the feeling and tone of the ending. I didn't like it.

I will return to the original version the next time I watch "Conan".
5 2010-06-17 The ultimate version of Conan When I was a kid I saw this movie for the first time after begging my parents to let me watch it. They were horrified, and I was ecstatic. This has been my favorite movie for as far back as I can remember and it still holds up against all of today's advancements in movie making. After watching this special edition with the additional scenes, I like it even more. After watching all the extra's on the disc, and watching the movie with the commentary, I think I understand now why this movie does not age like so many others of it's time. Almost everything in this movie, was filmed for real. There were almost no special effects (aside from a short scene where the demons try to take Conan, which does look dated) and virtually everything that was filmed was filmed for real. By this I mean they were using steel swords and actually swordfighting (Sandhal got her finger cut off in one of the fights, and she accidentally slit a guys throat in another - they both recovered) they were also actually in the middle east filming. It took them five years to make this movie, because they actually took the time and effort to do everything in such a way that it appeared real. It wasn't filmed in hollywood in some cheesy 80's set like most other movies of the time. There was also a lot of focus on the human element of the story, and the majority of the movie was just character development, the plot seemed to be based around the development of the characters, instead of the other way around. In the end, this movie turned out to be one of the greatest movies ever filmed in my opinion, and because of how real they kept the filming, I don't think it will ever loose it's luster. I hope when they finally transfer this to Blu-Ray, they don't do anything stupid like take away anything that was included in this version of the film.
5 2010-04-29 Awesome! This is one of my all time favorite movies. Some people have complained about the picture quality of other Conan the Barbarian DVDs, but this one looks pretty good on my HDTV.
1 2010-04-29 Cannot opt out of deleted scenes This movie is one of my favorite movies of all time... but this edition is awful. It adds deleted scenes into the movie proper, and you can't opt out of that 'feature'. It completely ruins the movie for me, and makes this DVD a complete waste of money as well. I would have liked to have gone through the deleted scenes as you do with any other movie; afterwords as a lark. There is a -reason- these scenes were deleted.. I wish they'd kept it that way, or made this a two disk set: one with the scenes in, one with them out, the way they did Legend.
5 2010-03-22 Fantasy myth with great actors and director.. This movie is very good - its entertaining from the start to finish, partly to Arnold Schwngr's character who we see maturing from the little child slave to a mighty warrior Conan. The other part of this continuous entertainment is due to a very good scenario that leads us into an evil world the Snake Sourcerer, who before his final hour tells Conan that it "thanks to me that you still live" which implies that Conan survived only because he wanted to take vengeance...I beg to differ - Conan is driven by his love for advnture and the unknown out there as much - along the way he meets good friends.
